I started running over 15 years ago once I gained that famous ‘freshman fifteen’ after my first year of college. I remember struggling to run just 500m with burning lungs and heavy legs. Within a year I starting racing 10ks, and within two years tried my first half marathon. I was instantly hooked on long distance running. I love that feeling of satisfaction of a long run, feeling amazed at what the body can do. This motivated me to try the marathon and over the last 12 years have run marathons across many Ontario towns, Las Vegas, New York and one of my favourites, the Disney World Goofy Race which combined a half and full marathon in two days. I’m still working back towards my PB of 3.41 but also have a different perspective on running. It’s become more about enjoyment than that ultimate time.
Running for me is my escape from day to day stressors. With two young children, a full time career and a husband with his own busy schedule I often feel like my head is spinning. As soon as I hit the road, trail or even treadmill my mind slows right down. To me it’s a moving meditation. My family jokes that if mommy is in a bad mood it means she needs out for a run.
Recently my husband and I celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary by running the Transrockies Heli Run in Cline River, Alberta. This time together training and racing has brought a whole new love of running for me. My hope is that our healthy habits rub off on our children and they understand the importance, and fun, of an active lifestyle.
Although my heart is happiest when out running I’ve promised myself I would take on some new challenges. Last summer I became more confident on the bike and this summer I’ll tackle the swim. Who knows where this will get me some day… maybe an ironman? I do like long distances… Time will tell.
