My journey as an athlete has been a short story so far; in my mid-30’s I was significantly overweight and unhealthy, so in 2009 I decided to change this and over time lost over 50 lbs and started to run. It wasn’t overnight, it wasn’t easy, but it changed my life. I ran my first 5km in June 2010 and my first Half Marathon (in Iceland) in 2011.
As I got more into ‘this running thing’ I wanted to push my limits, so in 2013 I decided to run the Ottawa Marathon and had Coach Tommy help get me there. It was amazing! Believe it or not, running that marathon was more fun that some 5kms I’ve done. Since then, I’ve continued to race but took 2014 as a year of exploration into other sports. My race highlight last year was spontaneously deciding to run the Maui 5km while on vacation (and not at all prepared to race – I didn’t even have my Garmin!)
Recently I’ve been spending a lot of time in Central America, surfing the waves, climbing volcanoes and spending time on white water rafting and kayaking. My ‘running career’ set me up with the ability to do these things and it’s amazing. Coming up in April I’ll be heading to Ecuador to take a whitewater kayak course on the rivers near Baños, followed by a week at a surf camp in Canoa. This summer you’ll find me out on Lake Ontario, testing my Standup Paddleboard skills in waves and yoga. As for running, I’m thinking of aiming for the Detroit Half in the fall, with some little ones in the meantime. The adventure continues!
