Binbrook was my first triathlon of the year. This race was meant to be a tune up race for the 70.3 in Mont Tremblant in a couple of weeks.
I got to the race a little early so got a prime racking position. When racking my bike in transition I always try to rack my bike next to one of the dividers between the poles. that way i don’t have a bike right next to me. Got everything all set, then headed down to the swim start.
I hopped in the water a little early and did a quick warm up, then hopped out and waited for the first wave to start.
Here’s the rundown of how each leg of the race went:
Swim – I started a little wide (I guess not doing a race since July of last year, I was little nervous about this start). The gun went off and I thought I was swimming in a straight line. Evidently not. I seemed to swim wide of the course. I cut in at the turn buoy. By that point I had caught the wave in front of me. I just kept turning over my arms. I got out of the water and saw 13:25. decent enough for a 750m swim. I looked at my Garmin file post race and the distance registered was 820m, so swam 1:39/100m. Pretty pleased with that pace for a race. Just need to swim in a straight line! With the Binbrook race, the run to transition is calculated as your swim time. The time in Sportstats is 14:45 for the 750m swim.
T1 – always seem to be fumbling around.. maybe a little out of practice. I was also trying out a new aero helmet today, so had to fumble with straps a bit.
Bike – The plan for the bike was to do this bike at my FTP. I found this a little tricky to do. I tried to maintain my power the best that I could as I’ve been doing in training. The bike course is flat, however with all the turns and at one point got stuck behind a dump truck! I would look down at my HR and would see it was about 165bpm, and thought if I was going to do any of that 7.5k run, I should tone it back a bit. I stayed aero most of the ride and wasn’t passed a whole lot out there. My bike time was 49:32. Avg power – 220w, NP 226w for a VI of 1.02. Pretty pleased with my effort on the bike.
T2 – legs were a little achy from bike. grabbed shoes and headed out on run.
Run – The first 1.5k of this race is on grass/gravel. I found this a little uneven and pretty muddy. Sure glad i didn’t wear my new shoes for this race. For the run, I figured it would go out and just run the best of my abilities, and not pay too much attention to HR or pace. After the first 1.5k its on pavement and rolling hills. Felt pretty good on the run and good to see friends and fellow Ignition Fitness athletes out on the course. The last 500m of the race my HR was over 170bpm and just needed to hang on til the finish. I finished the 7.5k in 35:58. Garmin registered 7.84k, for a 4:35 pace.
Finished with a time of 1:42:17 placed 8/30 in my age group and 54th overall. Pleased with results with the first tri of 2013.
