Government public education & outreach.
3 relatively seriously. 6 since I raced my first du.
2014 A race:
TBD - likely the 2015 World Age-Group Duathlon Championship qualifier.
Goals for 2014:
1) Stay injury free
2) Age group podium place in a MSC duathlon (at an event where the “big boys” are out)
3) Qualify for the 2015 Age Group Duathlon Worlds
Favourite piece of gear:
My team Canada tri suit and my Garmin 310XT.
The one piece of gear I don’t have that I really want is:
First, I want to get stronger physically, then I’ll pick out gear to make me even faster. But in the meantime, I do have a wish list with the brands Cervelo, Zipp and Shimano all over it!
Favourite “healthy” food:
Any vegetarian Thai food. That’s healthy, isn’t it? Alternatively, broccoli.
Favourite “unhealthy” food:
Anything vegetarian and deep fried: waffle fries, spring rolls, cheese sticks, you name it.
To reward myself after a race I like to:
Eat a healthy meal and then take a two-hour nap.
My race day routine:
Ideally as simple as possible, with all my gear laid out the night before and an egg sandwich + coffee for breakfast. Pre-race, I’ll do a short warm-up jog and a ride.
Coffee. Pinot Grigio.
I started doing triathlons/duathlons/running because...
Gosh, I can’t remember...
I love both the Recharge with Milk Toronto Island and Lakeside duathlons.
The race I’ve never done but always wanted to:
New Orleans Half Marathon.
None up until I started hitting the weights in university. My passion for endurance sports arose when a friend signed me up for the Friends For Life Bike Rally, a 6-day ride from Toronto to Montreal. I did it and was hooked - doing it five times over the years. I eventually branched out into running and then decided to combine the two into duathlon.
Favourite place to train:
Running - Toronto’s ravines and waterfront trails.
Cycling - The ride from Toronto to Oakville, or north along Warden Ave.
All variations of hill training. I prefer going UP hill.
What drives me to compete:
The adrenalin and endorphins; the simple thrill of pushing yourself harder and harder.
The power of SportStats: the quantifiable numbers that let you see the progress you make as a result of your hard work.
What I love about duathlon:
The sense of camaraderie and unity, where elites and rookies all toe up against the same start line.
Most exhilarating duathlon moment:
I’ve got two:
1. Completing my first duathlon (Toronto Island) in 2007
2. Coming back from injury to compete in the 2013 World Age Group Duathlon Championships
Morning person or night owl?
Night owl, but using espresso to learn to be a morning person.
In a fantasy world, this is what every day of my life would look like:
It would start with 10 hours of sleep and at some point, would include a workout (or two), time to volunteer, time to read and time with friends / family.
The one food item I could never give up:
Favourite ice cream flavour:
Mint chocolate chip, though I rarely eat desserts.
A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry. It’s powerful. I also adore Margaret Atwood’s MaddAddam trilogy.
What type of music I listen to when training:
House or progressive.
Other hobbies and interests:
I’m a regular volunteer and strive to give back to my community. It’s a grounding force in my life.
The strangest fact that nobody would ever guess about me is:
Maybe that this summer, I jumped off the 108th floor of the Stratosphere Hotel in Las Vegas.
