This went very well! I had a great time. Here’s a race report:
I felt very prepared and ready. Never had training like this before. I was very curious to see how I did today.
Swim: 17 mins
I wore a wetsuit. Water temp wasn’t too bad. I was in the first wave. I planned to start a bit to the back to avoid the chaos. I didn’t expect what happened but there ended up being A LOT of crowding. At least 4-5 times I had to slow and do the breast stroke because I had no where to go. Even when I got into a rhythm I found myself on somebody’s feet and had to look up and go around them. I drafted a bit here and there. I felt VERY good in the water. I’m positive if there was no one else swimming I could have done 15 mins but such is the sport of triathlon! Other people are there. I would like to discuss strategies in the future for this. In the past I’ve been closer to back of the pack so I didn’t run into this. I guess it was a bitter sweet moment! Also, sighting was much much better than usual for me. Overall my best tri swim yet, huge improvements from before.
Bike: 57 mins
Oh man I felt good on the bike! I was flying for most of it. Sixth line was obviously challenging and long, it slowed my time significantly but after that I was flying. Many people walked it. I did combo of in and out of saddle riding. I probably averaged close to 35ish or more without sixth line. Even on the rollers I was out of the saddle and pushing it up. I had a great time on the bike. Definitely huge improvements here.
Run: 37 mins
It started to pour on the run and the ground was soaked. Most of it was trails so it was tricky. Lots of mud. The first km had a lot of turns and finicky little hills, so difficult to get into a grove. After that I increased my speed and continued to run closer to 4:15ish/km. Definitely a negative split. The run course had multiple small hills, I found it challenging. Legs were pretty good though. Fairly tanked at the end.
Did exactly as directed, felt great, stomach fine, fatigue never an issue. I liked the gels. Great plan.
What would I do differently?
The swim. This is a new issue for me because I’m swimming a lot faster and starting to encounter lots of feet and bodies. Still had a very good time given the situation, but could have avoided a few slower points!
Great time. Milton has a challenging course. Can’t wait to race again next week. Loved the uniform too. Felt great to represent.
